Spectacular Sharing - London, England
If, like me, you follow the teachings of the great philosopher Smithy, off of Gavin and Stacey, you will be suspicious of the concept of sharing food. You order what you want and then eat it all, right? Well, apparently, wrong. London boasts some great market style restaurants serving street food meze. Absolute food heaven for David Cameron, Nick Clegg and anybody else that takes a far more mature attitude to sharing than me.
Wahaca
Wahaca, inspired by a vibrant Mexican market, specialises in Street Food served like tapas. It's light, fresh and combines Mexican cooking with local produce. The pork scratchings with guacamole are a perfect pre-nibbler with your Modelo Especial and then you can choose from Tacos, Quesadillas, Taquitos or Tostadas to share or larger meals just for you. The meat Taquitos were tasty but, on a very warm, thundery day, the absolute winners were the Summer Vegetable Tacos with courgettes, tomatoes, spinach and mint and feta. Wahaca's delicious, fun and very reasonably priced so you'll need to join the queue at peak times.
Baozi Inn
Off Charing Cross Road, at the bottom of a narrow side passage, edged with food vendors, there is the lantern lit Baozi Inn specialising in northern Chinese street food. At the little wooden tables, you can share Baozi (vegetarian or pork buns) and spicy Sichuan snacks. The spare rib and shitake mushroom noodle soup for the main course was delicious and the whole meal came to well under £20 per person with beer and tea.
The Real Greek Souvlaki and Bar
Flanked by the FT on one side, the Globe Theatre on the other and with views across the river to St Pauls and London's city powerhouses, The Real Greek on Bankside is the swankiest of the three restaurants. It specialises in Souvlaki, the greek grilled wraps, ranging from sausage to haloumi and filled to the brim with tzatzki. Cold and hot meze is brought out on special sharing stands to be gobbled down with warm flat bread and cold Cretan wine. Modern, slick and with views worth a banker's bonus.
